Gijsbert De Nooy is the current trainee at the USA's California Based team, California Mist. Many questions have been asked, of is he really good enough, and hes getting on a bit. Will the training costs be worth it.
Well, in his first Top Division race he has proved he has what it takes. In England, at the king stage of Essex Tour all the big favourites were looking at each other, and De Nooy slipped into the morning breakaway. His breakaway companions worked well together until the final hill of the day when De Nooy put in a punishing attack, and was suddenly by himself, with the remains of the break and the rampaging peloton after him. By this point the peloton had been tore apart, and there was no real team working on the front.
Knotts said "When he went on that final hill, we knew we had a chance. There were big name riders coming, but if he could just hold on."
And he did, holding off Sandro Montelbano by just 8 seconds at the line. It means De Nooy is the current race leader, and will be wearing the yellow/white jersey in the timetrial tomorrow.
De Nooy spoke after the race "I cant believe what ive just done, it feels like a dream. And this jersey, it is a special day that ill always remember. Thanks to my team for believing and investing in me. After this race, Im competing in Lappi Sea GP Classic, where I think the element of surprise may have gone now, and then heading back to the West coast to continue my training."
The jersey is expected to go onto the shoulders of Montelbano tomorrow, but for now its party time.

California Mist's Gijsbert De Nooy wins his first stage
After only 14 km of Stage 1 in Essex Tour, 2 riders got away from the peloton, which had a hard time cooperating. The two riders, Gijsbert De Nooy (California Mist) and Sandro Montelbano (Matrix team), kept increasing their lead and it seemed like it would no end take. Late in the race, too late, the peloton started speeding up, but the victory was already in the hands of the two break awayers. When the finishing line was near, Gijsbert De Nooy and Sandro Montelbano had a small chat before starting the sprint. Gijsbert De Nooy launched the sprint, but Sandro Montelbano quickly passed him by looking as the winner. As Sandro Montelbano thought the victory was his, Gijsbert De Nooy made an amazing come-back and managed to be the first rider of Colchester-Saffron Walden to cross the finishing line.
As the peloton got near the end of the stage, another rider (Evan Tomkins from Gradient Levellers) tried his luck for the third place. He safely created a small gap between him and the peloton, which was just enough for him to claim the third place.
Gijsbert De Nooy didn't hide his happiness for winning the stage. I have dreamed of this for long. My result today proves that hard training is worth it, said the cheerful winner, who yet has no current plans for the next race to strike at.
Knotts, manager of California Mist, was happy with the result: The whole team did well today. Everything turned out as we hoped, and luckily, Gijsbert De Nooy was the strongest rider out there today. The proud manager didn't hide that he was satisfied with Gijsbert De Nooy's result. Gijsbert De Nooy did well. No one deserved the victory more than him. He put his focus on this stage long ago, and he kept his motivation high. I'm happy for him and the team, said Knotts.

Ty Jon... Roels and Schaars were both marked, and couldn't hold in there on the big hills. Still hoping Roels can sneak into the top 9 in GC in the timetrial, expecting De Nooy to disappear from the standings completely
nice job, too bad one of your top riders couldn't have been the winner. still a win is a win is a win.
